When I’m coaching women at Go and Tell Gals, a phrase I’ll often use is this:
Don’t trade your core competencies.
When I say core competency - I mean the specific gifts and strengths, God has given you. I’m talking about the things you’re NATURALLY great at, they come so quickly to you. You don’t have to work at this thing, it’s second nature for you - maybe so much so that you assume everyone else can do it.
Why would we trade our core competencies?
Sometimes we want others to enjoy our competencies as much as we do, so we give away these roles.
Sometimes we lose sight of who we are.
Sometimes we forget that these gifts were given to us to serve others.
Anyhow, I realized that maybe I haven’t been trading a core competency - but I have been sleeping on one.
Each quarter I sit down to plan my podcast, and each month, I plan out what I think I want to post on social media to serve other women - but I haven’t been leaning into this core competency:
I love the Bible.
I’m not saying this to toot my own horn, because a core competency isn’t something you have to strive for. I look forward to reading it each morning. The Bible is deeply interesting to me, even the parts I don’t understand - they’re awe-inspiring - not confounding.
Lest you think I’m just very godly and pious, you should know I also love reality TV.
Anyhow, I realized that what I really wanted to do was bring my love of the Bible to a more prominent place on the podcast and on my social media. I wanted to create a safe space for women to study the Word together.
And so that is my long-winded way of saying - we’ve started a yearlong Bible Study on The Jess Connolly Podcast, and THIS is your invitation to join! We’re studying the book of James, with humbled and hungry hearts, and I hope you’ll listen along and dig in on your end too.
But I’ve got to tell you… now I’m wondering: What is YOUR core competency?
Grace and peace,
Jess

Planning, organizing, attention to detail. I’m slowly learning to hold both using this gift as well as being flexible and people focused. I can sometimes be so focused on the plan and schedule that I don’t leave room for being interrupted and listening to people.
