Behind The Stack: I Always Cry On Work Trips
Hi, my name is Jess, and I cry when I travel for work
Let me back up.
When I say I travel for work, here’s what I mean: I have two typically busy travel seasons, one in the spring and one in the fall. For the better part of September and October, and then again from February through May, I’m on the road a few times a month. I usually speak at women’s events, sometimes at churches on Sundays, and occasionally for a podcast interview or gathering.
As I write this (a few days early, on May 22), I’m wrapping up my third trip of the month: which feels like no small feat, considering I also had seminary finals, a family wedding, MAYCEMBER (you know, the million events kids have in May), a handful of family birthdays, Mother’s Day, and a weekend preaching at our church in Charleston.
It’s been a lot. And that’s an important detail to remember as I confess why I cry (and why I still keep saying yes to travel).
In heavy travel seasons, I’ll often bring a friend, team member, or my daughter with me. It helps! Sometimes it even staves off the tears. But not always.
So: Why do I cry on work trips?
